I have to admit I was seriously worried this product would not work the first time I used it. Every year for the last three years I have had to call a plumber out to my house to clean out the drain from roots from the neighbor''s tree. It''s not super expensive, but it is annoying and when your drain suddenly clogs and your kids can''t flush, it get''s ugly real fast, and plumbers in this area aren''t in a big hurry to rush out and help for something so small for so little. So the last time this happened, I thought, "What the hell I will give this a try," and bought a bottle at my local hardware store.

Again I didn''t really think it would work, but the plumber wasn''t coming for another day so I had nothing to lose. So I tried it. and let me tell you I had a major clog this time, a single flush was all I could get. SO I followed the instructions, and managed to get the product in the bowl and with my one flush got it all down the drain. It started fizzing instantly.

Now the instructions say to let it sit 4-6 hours, but I wasn''t having that. I wanted these roots dead, I wanted his friends dead, I wanted his whole family wiped out. SO I wait 10 hours. I put the Bathroom on lockdown. When I got up the next morning, the first thing I did was flush that toilet, no change, the bowl started backing up on me. I was pissed.

BUT WAIT THERE''S MORE! I heard it. That gurgle sound that said something moved. The bowl emptied. I could hardly wait for the tank to refill. my fingers danced on the handle as I waited for the sound of the water to start. I flush... and it went down.... I rushed to the tub and turned on the bath water full blast then back to the toilet and flushed again. It went down AGAIN. At this point, I''m screaming for my wife and kids to get in here.

"What?" My wife says.
"Look look it worked!"
"Great," She says. " SO can I shower now?"
"Yeah Baby." I said to her, "You can shower ALL YOU WANT..."

So yeah, this actually does work.

This has stopped my recurring, yearly sewer rod-out because of the accursed Locust tree the city planted in front of my house. This will be the third year that I have not had to have the guy out to rod tree roots out of my sewer line. I use once a year about the end of June, so far, so good. What I suggest is the same as others, empty the two powders into a small, dry container, mix the two dry powders thoroughly by hand (do not add water!!). Remember, this stuff foams seriously so if you have one of the slower, older "swirly"-flush toilets, start your flush, wait until it is just starting to exhaust and then dump the powder in; if you have a more modern fast-flush, pull the handle and dump the powder at the same instant. You definitely do not want any residue left in the bowl at end of flush. I dump the stuff in just before bed, and let it sit overnight in the line. In the morning just use your bathroom/kitchen normally and the problem will be gone.

[UPDATE JUNE 2014]: I have been using this once yearly and still no more problems. As a clincher.... my house is 120 years old and I have no record of the sewer being camera''d, so I hired a service to come in and run a camera through to the connection with the village main line. He completed about an hour ago, and totally clean, no sign of tree roots, collapsed tiles or anything else. Period. I saw it. The man couldn''t find anything wrong at all. So, I think this proves that this stuff really works. Nobody will probably read this since is is an aged review, but at least I posted. :)
[UPDATE JUNE 2015]: Still no problems, no backup or flooding. Next week I will treat the sewer again, but I think my tree root problems are over.
[UPDATE JUNE 2016]: Yup, still good and no problems.
[UPDATE MAY 2017]: Oh well, what the heck, I will update as long a I am thinking about it; I don''t even think about sewer backup any more :) No problems last summer at all, I am using it a bit early this year, but I think I will be fine.
[UPDATE JUNE 2018]: Yup, still root-trouble free. I had no problems last year at all. In addition, my next-door neighbor started using Roebic three years ago and his tree root problems disappeared. I still remind him of my big favor I did telling him about Roebic; very handy when I want to borrow something. :0) Incidentally, Roebic makes a couple of root remover products, be sure that the label specifies FOAMING, not just chemical or crystal powder. I don''t know anything about those.
My apologies about not answering some who posted a question!! For some reason Gmail stopped notifying me that I had a new post in my review. Guess I should check in occasionally.
[UPDATE JUNE 2019]: Here I am again, it''s time to do my yearly treatment tonight. No problems last summer/autumn, and my next door neighbor has no problems either since he started using Roebic a few years ago. It sure is a relief not to have to constantly call the sewer guy out. Keep on truckin'' folks!
[UPDATE MAY 2020]: Yup, still no sewer problems last year. I think this will be my last update, I am not sure if anyone is reading this anymore. Time marches on. This stuff works great for what it is intended.

FEB.11/2021: Note that I have tried many times to find the questions directed to me about this product but can''t locate them any more. I can edit my posts, but not answer questions, so I''m not ignoring anyone, I just cannot find where the directed questions are. Maybe Amazon doesn''t allow this anymore?? I don''t know.
JUNE 2021: Still no more problems, same with my neighbor. New family moved in 4 years ago, I told them of the sewer problem, and they have no problems either.

Seems like every single time you call a plumber out now a days, they try to sell you on a complete pipe replacement costing 10K! Then they try and tell you they just wont know how bad it is until they dig up your line. Even with a camera! Seriously?? Unless your sewer line has collapsed, why would you replace the entire line? Tree roots will happen. I would think even if you replace the line. So kill the roots! Plain and simple.

Now if you don’t want to cut your trees down or worse, secretly cut your neighbors trees, because yes tree roots go a lot farther than you realize, use this product instead. This stuff is great. Ever since I started using this stuff, I have had no problems. No more 10K bids to replace my sewer line. And of course they are having a special that week only! I even watched the camera footage (after Game of Thrones of course) and there was just one spot. They cleared the smallest hole through it just to get my toilets flushing again until I signed the contract to replace my line. Well I didn’t do it and this stuff saved me 10K.

So I wont be giving you a 5 year update like that other reviewer did but for gad sakes, if he had no problems for 5 years, why are you thinking about it? Heck you should be using this stuff right now even if you don’t have a problem. But there are a few tricks to this..

1) Plan to dump this in your lowest toilet at bed time
2) Get a 5 gallon bucket of plain water ready to pour into the toilet
3) Dump the contents into a bowl (that you will only ever use for this stuff) and crush the big chunks with a screw driver
4) When its time, dump the entire bowl in as quickly as you can. This stuff will start foaming IMMEDIATELY!!
5) Flush the toilet quickly
6) Dump the 5 gallons of water into the toilet
7) Flush 1-2 more times to get your toilet water level again. The 5 gallons seems to confuse it
8) Go to bed! Don’t use the water until you wake up.
9) Spend your 10K on a boat

Killed and apparently ate away the dead roots. Be careful when using it through your toilet rather than in the cleanout pipe outside. Pour all of it into a bowl and empty the bowl into the toilet, ready to flush instantly. I tried to pour it out of the bottle, and it took 4-5 seconds to shake it all out, but it started foaming instantly, and by the time the bottle was empty, the foam had filled the toilet halfway up. I flushed and the top of the foam actually peaked over the rim of the toilet before it all started going back down. I had to flush three times to get it all down. But it worked! Flushes are back to normal now.

I became familiar with Foaming Root Killer on the recommendation of a plumber. One day about a year and a half ago the main line from the house to the street backed up. There used to be Eucalyptus trees up and down all the streets in town, lining the horse trails. For about 30-40 years they stayed healthy, but then a blight hit and the trees became diseased and frail and hundreds were cut down by the city. I think we have the distinction of being one of the few blocks with a few trees left and two of those big’ol trees happen to be right in front of the house, one on each side of the sewer line to the house.
Before calling in the big guns and because we did not know if it were tree roots causing the problem we tried various means to unclog. From scalding hot water to liquid and plumbing crystals, baking soda and lemon, bleach. All for naught. And the small snake we had just wasn’t reaching anything. All signs pointed to those trees. So we called in the plumber. The power auger and large bore snake fed out about to the treeline and hit the clog. Tree roots for sure. It didn’t take long for the electric auger to grind out the roots and we were good to go (pun intended.)
So a year later here we go again. Line backs up on a Saturday night. Knowing what it was causing the problem it was a choice between renting the big auger and snake or calling the plumber on a Sunday. Turned out the plumber was a gem and came Sunday morning with a rate equal or less than renting the equipment. In minutes the line was clear again. Then he mentioned Foaming Root Killer. He said just pour it in the cleanout, wait 4-5 hours before running water through the pipes after the initial small amount of water to activate it and that’s it. It will kill the roots and eliminate his needing to come out again.
I looked it up on line and ordered 2 bottles. One for now, just to be sure the roots don’t start to grow again and one bottle for 4-6 months from now. I did read in reviews the powder packs down hard in the bottle so I was prepared. I ended up pouring the bottle I was using into a jar to be sure to get the packed powder. It wasn’t too packed. I used a spoon and chipped a few chunks that had formed but all in all it was easy. Then I emptied it into the clean out with a little water to activate. It seemed to expand and move towards the street just fine.
Did it work? Of course only time will tell. I’ll try to remember to update this review whether we have another back-up or not. Hopefully it will kill or at least discourage the eucalyptus roots from growing into the pipe. We’ll see. I’m giving it 4 stars for ease of use. If we don’t have anymore backups I’ll change it to 5 stars in the future.
Update: 2/20/18 It''s been a year and no more backups-Works perfectly!

Caveat: Without looking in the line with a camera, it''s impossible to know the degree to which this product is effective. I''ve been using this product for several years, however, and haven''t had a recurrence of roots blocking the sewer line. I use it three times/year instead of the recommended two, just to be on the safe side.

There''s an issue in actual usage, but it''s easily addressed: The powder is typically caked up in the container -- and is sometimes difficult to dislodge -- yet you need to pour it down the toilet all at once. My solution is to empty the container into a large, disposable plastic cup. You might need to use a plastic fork or knife to get all of it out. Then, pour down the toilet and flush three times.

Oh, and then, don''t use any water in the home for at least four hours, which is difficult without prior planning. Remembering not to flush is really hard. :)

I bought and used 4 pounds of RootX, but it didn''t reach my entire 80 foot sewer line. So I only needed a pound and RootX didn''t have 1 pound portions, so I went with the Roebic. Big mistake! These foaming root killers come in 2 parts that have to be combined before using. With the rootX it''s just a matter of shaking the container with the added funnel back a forth for a minute before pouring it down the cleanout. Unlike the RootX the Roebic material seemed old and in clumps, not good. It wouldn''t come even come out of the container when I tried to dump it out. I finally pried it out with a screw driver into a separate container, got the clumps out as best I could, and dumped it down the clean out followed by 4 gallons of water. The foaming was nothing like the RootX and it didn''t even cover 40 ft of sewer. RootX was much much better.

Well, for the time being, it looks like our sewer line is working OK after an application of this product.

I am a big fan of their K-67 Granular Concentrate Drain and Trap Cleaner (for our bathroom sink issues) since that product had virtually eliminated my annual ''snaking'' event since I used it in late 2013. Just like this, it''s a maintenance product & I am so pleased with it.

I gave this Roebic FRK a try after our toilet bowl & tub would gurgle & back-up (the pipe where the washer''s drain hose is connected would also overflow) whenever the washer is in use & drains a huge amount of water after its wash & rinse cycle.

To remedy the problem, first, I tried using 2 jugs of InstantPower Main Line cleaner but the issues remained. Then, I tried several jugs of bleach (poured it on the washer line & onto the toilet bowl). Same, the main line issues persisted. I checked the vent pipes for obstruction but found none.

I dug & looked for a clean-out pipe around the house but since we live in a 73-year old house, did not find one. It looked like the clean-out was underneath the crawl space and I did not want to do the snaking there. I also watched several YouTube videos how to use a power rooter.

I was so sure that the main line issues were caused by roots because we have a huge Sycamore tree just near the sidewalk and that we had not yet cleaned out the main line since we moved in that house in late 2008.

So, I was about to call the dreaded rooter man & part with, at least, a minimum of $300 when I decided to check out first some main line cleaners here at Amazon. And, was I glad I did!!!

The product arrived just in time before we made a long trip to Nevada, so I poured the powder-mix (I used a dry metal container where I lightly pound some powder that clumped together to get best results). Dump, flush, followed up by another flush using a bucketful of water. Instructions says to let it sit for 8 hours, at least.

When we arrived from our trip, we used the washer (with our fingers crossed) to wash our dirty clothes...and, to our amazement and delight, the gurgling & backup issues were gone! Wow!

Did this product really killed the roots obstructing the main line??? Was it really that effective???

It had just been 2 months since we used this product but we had been using our washer weekly since then and had no mainline issues to report.

I just ordered another container of this product last month & intends to use this, at least, 2X a year as a maintenance item -- if, after a year, we don''t experience the gurgling & back-up issues in the tub & toilet bowl whenever we use the washer.

For $40 a year, I''ll go that route instead of the hassle of calling and dealing with the rooter man.

Only time will tell. For now, thanks, Roebic!!!
